What Are Casement Windows?
A casement window is hinged on one side and opens outward like a door. It swings open using a crank or handle, giving you maximum ventilation and a clear, unobstructed view. Casement windows can be installed as a single unit, in pairs, or in larger combinations — and they fit a wide range of home styles.
Key Features of Casement Windows
- Hinged on the side: The window is hinged at one vertical side (left or right) and opens outward from the opposite side.
- Crank or lever operation: Many casement windows are operated using a hand-crank mechanism, though some may have a push/pull handle.
- Unobstructed view: Because the window swings open rather than sliding or lifting, there is no horizontal sash or frame in the way, providing an excellent view.
- Great ventilation: When open, the entire window area is available for airflow, making casement windows ideal for maximizing ventilation.
- Sealing and energy efficiency: Casement windows generally provide a tighter seal when closed, making them energy-efficient and effective at keeping out drafts.
Casement Window Line Options
We offer two window line options: 3 1/4 and 4 9/16. The main difference is the frame depth and the overall profile.
3 1/4 Casement — Slim Profile
Best for a lighter, more streamlined appearance.
-
Sleeker frame look for clean curb appeal
-
Great choice for standard residential openings
-
Ideal when you want a refined design without a heavier frame
Recommended if you prioritize: aesthetics, a lighter visual frame, standard replacement projects.

Glass & Glazing Options
Casement windows can be ordered with different glass (glazing) options to support comfort and energy savings. The right choice depends on your project, window size, and your goals.
Common glazing options:
-
Low-E glass: helps reduce heat loss in winter and can also help limit heat coming in during summer. It also reduces UV rays that can fade fabrics and carpeting.
-
Clear glass: a clear insulated glass unit can offer better noise protection than single-pane glass, but it does not have the same heat-control benefit as Low-E.
-
Triple pane glass: often chosen for higher energy efficiency because of the extra pane. Special coatings may also be used to improve energy performance.
Low-E coating options: LoE 180, LoE2-272, LoE3-366, LoE i89.
Benefits of Casement Windows
- Enhanced Ventilation: Since they open fully, casement windows allow for better air circulation and easy cleaning.
- Energy Efficiency: The tight seal provided by the window when closed can help with insulation and reduce energy loss.
- Security: Casement windows can be more secure than some other window types because the locking mechanism is often integrated into the frame and hard to tamper with when closed.
- Wide View: The absence of a vertical or horizontal frame in the middle allows for an uninterrupted, panoramic view.
In summary, casement windows are prized for their ease of use, energy efficiency, and excellent ventilation, making them a popular choice in homes and buildings.
