Hung Window
A Hung Window (often referred to as a double-hung or single-hung window) is a type of window that features one or more movable sashes that slide vertically within the window frame. The term “hung” refers to how the sashes are suspended or “hung” within the frame, typically using a system of pulleys, springs, or balance mechanisms.
Key Features of Hung Windows
- Vertical Movement: The window sashes move up and down to open or close the window. The lower sash typically moves upward, while the upper sash may move downward (in double-hung windows) or remain fixed (in single-hung windows).
- Sashes: The movable sections of the window that contain the glass. These are typically made from vinyl, or aluminum and fit within the frame to slide vertically.
- Track System: The sashes move along a track or groove, which helps them slide smoothly. In older windows, this was often achieved using a pulley system with counterweights; in newer models, balance mechanisms or springs are used to assist with the window’s movement.
- Tilt-in Features (Optional): Many modern double-hung windows feature a tilt-in mechanism, allowing both sashes to tilt inward for easier cleaning.
Types of Hung Windows:
- Single-Hung Window In a single-hung window, only the lower sash is operable (it moves up and down), while the upper sash is fixed in place.
- Double-Hung Window Both the upper and lower sashes are operable and can be moved up or down, providing more flexibility for ventilation and ease of cleaning.
Benefits of Hung Windows
- Easy Ventilation By adjusting the movement of the sashes, you can control airflow through the window, allowing ventilation from the top, bottom, or both.
- Classic Aesthetic Double-hung windows have a traditional and timeless look that fits many architectural styles, especially in older homes or buildings.
- Space-Saving Since the sashes slide vertically, there is no need for clearance space outside or inside the window, which makes them ideal for rooms facing walkways or other tight spaces.
- Ease of Maintenance Many modern double-hung windows have sashes that tilt inward, making it easier to clean both the exterior and interior of the glass.
In summary, hung windows are known for their vertical movement, ease of ventilation, and classic aesthetic. Double-hung windows provide versatility in airflow and maintenance, making them a popular choice for many residential applications.
